Her fan conceals her
As tears fall like dead blossoms
Eyes already drowned.

This is my entry for :iconoriental-fantasy:'s contest. The theme was "Hand Fans and Blossoms" like their lovely new group icon contains.

I had longer pieces of literature in mind for this contest, but I decided that a haiku sort of suited it best. A haiku, as you may or may not know, originates from Japan, which suits thw focus of the group. This type of poetry has a 5-7-5 syllable structure. Haikus are meant to be brief, but meaningful. Allow me to explain the meaning in this haiku.

In this poem, the hand fan is supposed to represent the past. I chose to make it represent the past because of the way they are shaped. They have those many folded layers that reminded me of how memories of the past overlap in almost "folded patterns."

Hand fans are used usually to cool oneself, therefore making yourself feel better. In this haiku, the woman is "hiding" in her past because she thinks that this will make her feel better.

The woman in this haiku has a happier past than her present life. She wants to be happy, so she wants to go back to the time when she WAS happy. She is unable to do so, but she tries to anyway.

While she is living in her past, she has moments when she snaps out of it and returns to the present. This is when she realizes that things will and can NEVER be the same. That's when she cries, when she feels sadness, anguish, and despair.

"her tears fall like dead blossoms"

Blossoms are a sign of new beauty, to me. Flowers represent beauty, not only physical, but internal. To me, they represent everything beautiful about life, whether it be family, friendship, love, happiness, music, etc.

Because a blossom is a flower that has yet to bloom, beauty that has yet to bloom, blossoms represent NEW BEAUTY, new hope for tomorrow, something NEW.

But a dead blossom?

A dead blossom is used to represent just the opposite of one that is living.

A dead blossom shows what COULD have been, what WOULD HAVE happened, the hope that WAS there, but is not anymore.

Her tears fall like dead blossoms. Her sadness reflects everything that she could have had in her present that she had in her past.

"eyes already drowned"

"Drowning" in TEARS, that is. Her sadness has killed the way she sees things, it has killed her perspective and her outlook in life.

So I guess that if you take anything out of this haiku, it's to not dwell on the past. If you do so, you'll never be able to focus your attention on your present. Sure, things might have been better for you before, but if you want things to be good for you again, you'll have to work and dream hard for it in your today, not your yesterday.

If you do choose to live in the past, you'll feel sadness and you'll feel a void. Keep moving forward! You can look back every now and then, but don't turn all the way around and walk back. Walk forward! : D

So. Whoa! My artist's description was waaay longer than my actual deviation! xD Haha... Please comment! <3 Comments motivate me... ;-;
